Ask Dr. Gourmet: Stevia

SteviaQ: What is your opinion of Stevia – the latest sweetener – and of the blended brand “Truvia”?

A: Stevia has been around forever it seems. The natural sweetener is made from the Stevia rebaudianaplant. Keep in mind that no matter how “natural” such a product is, there’s still industrial processing and refining that takes place to turn the plant into the powder-like substance. Granulated sugar does, after all, come from beets or sugar cane. Stevia

I use SweetLeaf brand of stevia. It has 0 calories, 0 carbs, and a 0 glycemic index. I don't have a good opinion of Truvia. It really is not a stevia product as Rebiana is not an ingredient in the stevia plant, nor is it found in nature. It is produced by the action of chemicals and stringent alcohols on various stevia glycosides and contains residues of ethanol and methanol. It is also 99.1% erythritol, and 30% of the corn they use to make the erythritol is GMOs. Evidently, some people are having reactions to it.
