A Healthy Pregnancy
with Faith Bontrager, RN, BSN

Faith Bontrager, RN, BSNThe CDC released some great news this week.  From 2000 to 2008 the percentage of mothers who initiated breastfeeding increased over 4 percentage points.

This is great news for babies and their mothers. Regular readers of this column are already aware that breast milk is the best food for young babies and breastfeeding also provides important health benefits for women. Great News About Breastfeeding

Banana Nut BreadRecipe in Pictures

I love banana nut bread. This healthy recipe has a few more calories than most of the muffins or breads recipes that are on the Dr. Gourmet website, but a lot less fat and sugar than most recipes out there. Even so, a lot of those calories are from monounsaturated fats in the pecans. Best of all? You get 15% of the daily fiber you need.

Make these muffins on a weekend day for a grab and go healthy breakfast. These are simple to make, keep well for a few days and are not only delicious but have lots of fiber.

Zucchini BreadRecipe in Pictures

You might think that recipes like quickbreads are only a way to get whole grains. They are also a great way to get vegetables in your diet, and this recipe not only has zucchini but raisins, nuts, and great quality whole grains.

This is a little more difficult to make than a simple muffin recipe. The extra step of whipping the egg whites until frothy is worth it, though, because it adds a lightness to the bread that it doesn’t have otherwise. While the recipe seems to have a lot of ingredients, most of them are pretty common pantry items and this is well worth making. Rich, moist, spicy… the perfect quick bread for breakfast.
