But sometimes you can’t make your pizza from scratch (like when you’re at work). These are the pizzas we’ve tested to be eating well and eating healthy. Enjoy!

Chef Tim Says….

We have been reviewing convenience foods here at Dr. Gourmet for a few years. The idea began because my patients talked about eating Lean Cuisine meals. I will admit that at the time I hadn’t had a frozen meal in longer than I could remember. Mind you, I love to cook and a lot of folks don’t. Likewise, I work to make time to cook because I know that it’s the way to living well and living longer.

O.K., that’s me but you may be different. You may not like to cook every day or may not feel you have the time. So I took this to heart and we began testing a lot of different convenience foods. Most of these are frozen meals like Lean Cuisine. We’ve now tasted and reviewed over a hundred such meals and some are pretty darn good and others pretty darn terrible. How to Choose Convenience Foods

Featured Recipe

Egg Salad

Yes, you can eat egg salad. The variations I will leave up to you. My brother loves Heinz India Relish and I like capers. I will also say that I have tried this recipe both with the reduced-fat mayonnaise and the non-fat and it makes little difference in flavor.

Barbecue Shrimp Salad

This is a perfect healthy summer picnic recipe. Make this along with the Chipotle Jack Grits Cakes and Cole Slaw and you’re good to go.

Chinese Chicken Salad

This is the perfect complete summer salad (but you can serve it in the winter also). Light and filling, it has everything you want in a salad – fresh crunchy veggies, a sweet sour dressing, savory meat….

It may interest you to know that the food you keep at home provides 72%, by weight, of all food that you eat. This is assuming that you do not prepare most meals at home, however. If you do make most of your meals at home (breakfast and dinner made at home and taking your lunch with you to work or school), then 93% of the food you eat comes from what is kept in your home.

So what? Of course your food comes from what you have at home. Researchers at Rutgers University wondered if there was a difference in what foods were actually in the home between those families with overweight members and those families who were all of normal weight. If It’s In the House….

These are full meals from Healthy Choice – entree, veg, starch and dessert. This week I chose their Beef Tips Portobello and their Classic Meat Loaf, which have 270 and 360 calories respectively. The amount of sodium in each meal is fairly reasonable – for processed foods: the Classic Meat Loaf comes in at 550 milligrams of sodium while the Beef Tips Portobello is at 600 milligrams of sodium. Again, not outrageous. What drew me to these meals in particular, other than the comfort food angle, is the amount of fiber in each meal. Healthy Choice Comfort Food

Because of this you can’t know for sure how much Vitamin K you are consuming when eating convenience meals. For this reason I tell my Coumadin patients to avoid eating frozen and other convenience foods. Your doctor may feel differently and you should follow their guidance.

Generally speaking they’re on the down side of acceptable, so after testing ten or so I figured we’d done about all of the “We eat it, so you don’t have to,” that I could stand in the name of science.

This week, however, I spotted a new product from one of the frozen food companies that consistently gets good marks: Michael Angelo’s. They call these new products “Pocket Calzones,” and although they’re a bit high in sodium for their size, I decided to give them a shot. Maybe Michael Angelo’s could succeed where other companies had failed. Michael Angelo’s Pocket Calzones

I doubt that they care much what I say but I’d like to think they are paying attention. That’s why I was interested when I came across their Thai Stir Fry. Usually they label their items “Lower in Sodium” but this one was not – yet it has right at 400 mg of sodium per serving. And this turned out pretty good. Two New Dishes From Amy’s

I have been looking for fish sticks and just haven’t been able to find any to review. This is because the big companies put so many chemicals in their products that I don’t feel all that comfortable reviewing them (let alone having to eat them). Most every one of them I have looked at contains monosodium glutamate.

I did come across a close substitute from the company Blue Horizon Natural. They sell a product they call “bites” that are sold as hors d’oeuvres but will work as a lunch or main course. Fish Sticks? Well… Maybe Not.

Those of you who follow these reviews know that while I am not a fan of convenience food, I am realistic enough to know that some people are going to use them as part of their day to day lives. One reason I don’t care for them is that there are so many unusual ingredients in Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice and the like that it worries me.

The one good thing about most gluten free offerings is that they are more natural than the mainstream frozen meals. There have been an increasing amount of gluten free offerings and it’s good to find a company that has offerings that are OK choices. We reviewed a few previously from Gluten Free Café and they were good choices. Here’s our report on a few more. Three from Gluten Free Cafe

I have said in the past that the typical American eats over 6000 milligrams (or 6 GRAMS) of sodium per day. A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine (2010;362:590-9) means I’m going to have to update that figure: the latest estimates, for 2005-2006, estimate that every adult male in the United States eats an average of 10.4 grams of salt per day. Women, on the other hand, only eat a more modest (and I use that term facetiously) amount of 7.3 grams per day.

That’s a tablespoon and a half (4.5 teaspoons), for men, and about 1 tablespoon of salt (3 teaspoons) for women.

We know that reducing the amount of salt we eat can help reduce blood pressure and your risk of heart disease – from stroke to heart attack. If everyone in the United States over 35 years old reduced their salt intake by only 3 grams per day, what kind of impact would that have on our country’s overall health? Quantifying the Effects of Less Salt

People send me stuff all the time. Some of it is good and some not so good. Sometimes they write and ask if they can send samples, and we always warn them that they may not particularly like the review. I even have been contacted after we have tested and reviewed something, to see if I am interested in further information. I don’t mind any of this; it’s tough to get noticed in the marketplace and when you have what you feel is a great product, it’s good to increase awareness.

It’s kinda cool getting the packages: it’s a bit like Christmas. Not only are the arrivals sometimes unexpected, one is not always sure what’s inside. One of the most recent arrivals was Flavor Magic Portion Control Sheets. These came with more promotional information than almost any product we’ve received. They are described by the manufacturer as “innovative sheets” that “teach consumers how to practice sensible protein portion control.” Flavor Magic

What is the difference between a meal and a snack?

While it’s easy to know which is which when you’re following a structured plan like The Real World Diet, most people don’t consciously plan their meals. When you buy a 400-calorie package of cookies from the vending machine or eat a plate of finger foods at a company cocktail party, do you consider those “snacks” or “meals”? You might eat more later if you’ve mentally tagged that food a “snack.” Is It a Meal, or Is It a Snack?

100 grams of un-popped popcorn contains 375 calories, while 100 grams of popped has a similar amount at 387 calories. When I passed the frozen foods aisle at Whole Foods and saw that they had the other two varieties of Naan pizzas, I seriously thought about passing them up.

All too often we find a great frozen meal, only to have our expectations shattered when we try another meal from that company. Consistency is just not frozen foods’ strong suit, and Tandoor Chef is no exception. Their Vegetable Pad Thai was terrible and their Tikka Masala was good but an incomplete meal and not worth the trouble. On the other hand, the Naan pizzas were great, and frozen pizzas are just not that good very often. Could the proverbial lightning strike twice (or rather, four times)? More Naan Pizzas

And some of those have been truly bad, which makes me hesitate to test frozen pizzas in general.

But when I saw these Naan Pizzas from Tandoor Chef at my local Whole Foods I was intrigued. Some of the best pizza I’ve ever had was made from my Pantry Meal recipe for Pita Bread Pepperoni Pizza, and I love naan, the Indian bread made by hand and baked in a big clay oven. So I grabbed a couple and took them for taste testing. Naan Pizzas

There’s no shortage of such dishes in the grocery store. It’s an easy item to make and reheat and the structure of the dish just lends itself to being frozen. For instance, with lasagna the noodles are broad and flat and should remain firm with freezing. There’s enough moisture in the sauce and filling to keep the dish appealing when reheated and then there’s cheese. Face it, melted cheese is great. Layers Work

Physicians don’t love to go to meetings but somehow they end up at a lot of them. Often these are breakfast meetings and to entice doctors to come there’s usually some food (and almost always coffee). The quality varies and because it’s breakfast, it’s not awful but there’s seldom a healthy choice. Muffins (not so good ones that are not so good for you) and bagels (usually of the frozen variety that are all white flour). Generally there is at least some fruit.

I just don’t understand why there’s no real effort at making this better. I ask repeatedly but get a shrug. There is one meeting that I have some influence with and this month it’s going to be different. Stay tuned…

I love stories like these. They are all over the web. They are research studies that are funded by a particular company to make the public think that their product is somehow healthier (in this case flavanoids = good and chocolate = flavanoids therefore chocolate = good).

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/172098.php

Look, I like chocolate and it’s not really bad for you unless you eat a lot of it (which most Americans do at about 12 pounds a year). It’s statements like this that make folks think eating chocolate is good for you:

“Being able to fully measure and communicate the levels of flavanol antioxidants in products is increasingly important for studying the potential health benefits of cocoa and chocolate and providing information to consumers,” said Debra Miller, Ph.D., Director of Nutrition at The Hershey Company.

It’s OK to study this but until you really prove something there’s no reason to do a press release (unless, of course, you are the publicist who’s job it is to send out press releases).

Dr. Miller, when you can show through research that risk of eating 12 pounds of chocolate a year is outweighed by the benefits of the flavanoids in that 12 pounds of chocolate that’s something to report on.

Oh yeah, am I the only one who thinks that the title Director of Nutrition at The Hershey Company is the best oxymoron?

So this is where my new project began. About a week ago I was finishing my morning clinic and in the office where I keep my jacket I found this Mcdonalds bag. It had been brought in by one of the doctors and contained a Quarter Pounder and french fries. Look at the size of that coke! At least there’s a couple of oranges for dessert. I especially love that it’s sitting on the Mayo tray (that’s what the stainless steel surgical cart is called).

I see this a lot and it’s really frustrating. Time and again I will go to a meeting, Grand Rounds or a lecture and what is served is almost always pretty disgusting. Not just because the food is so unhealthy but it’s also so bad. Generally speaking, doctors eat what you eat. They tell you not to and then this is what they have for lunch. It’s not just doctors, though. Nurses and staff who see illness daily that’s clearly related to lifestyle order food from the most awful places. There are some exceptions and I promise to share those with you as well.

The next time your doctor asks you to lose weight or eat better ask him or her what they had for lunch! It may (or may not) surprise you.

Eat well, eat healthy, enjoy life!

OK, I know should be skeptical. After all, frozen meals are at their very nature suspect. Giving the folks who make them the benefit of the doubt, this has to be a difficult task. They have to create a good meal to begin with, recreate it to make sure that the ingredients are cooked properly for freezing and re-cooking, package the whole thing up, freeze it, ship it across the country, have it sit in a grocery freezer for goodness knows how long and then trust that it will be reheated properly. To expect all of that to be successful is a lot to ask, but even more so when rice noodles are involved.

I love Pad Thai. I have had some really great versions and some really terrible ones in restaurants. It’s easy to make this dish badly and very difficult to make it good. So much has to come together. Good sauce, veggies just right, tofu cooked well and the rice noodles not overdone. Most end up a big greasy pile of noodles and overcooked veggies on a plate. Two From Tandoor Chef

I haven’t done specific testing and there’s not great research about the amount of sodium needed to have a dish taste salty. Subjectively, my informal research says that a dish has to have about 300 mg of sodium at least to taste “salty enough.” Looking at the Gluten Free Café Pasta Primavera in the grocery store I was a bit skeptical. This is a new product line from the folks at Hain Celestial Group and this dish contains only 260 mg of sodium.

Its aroma while cooking was mostly of the veggies, especially the green beans and the peppers. The instructions call for cooking 3 minutes after piercing the plastic and then removing the plastic to stir. I was very careful stirring because rice pasta can fracture and break up. After another 3 minutes the dish looked really good. Two From the New Gluten Free Cafe

You know as well as I do that frozen pizza doesn’t have much going for it. Too often you end up with pizza crust that’s too doughy or the toppings are flavorless (or both). I’ve made Pepperoni Pizza on pita bread and had that turn out better than many frozen pizzas (and here’s the Pepperoni Pizza Pantry Meal recipe to prove it). This week, however, I had quite the surprise. Michelina’s Gets it (Almost) Right

One meal has only 270 calories, but it contains 7 grams of fat, 550 milligrams of sodium, and only 5 grams of fiber.
The cracker aisle is one area that is less of a challenge for those wanting to eat gluten free. There’s a wide variety of crackers on the market and they are comparably priced with other crackers. Most of them are made with rice flour. As with many of the rice based gluten free products these contain very little fiber: often less than a gram per serving. Gluten-Free Breads and Crackers

You may recall that we’ve reviewed some frozen meals from Michelina’s here in the past, and they’ve gotten uniformly bad reviews, whether they were from their Authentico line or their Lean Gourmet line. Still, sometimes the frozen meal companies get it right, so when I spotted two shrimp and pasta dishes I decided to give them another chance. In Search of Seafood

And Lean Cuisine puts out so many frozen meals that despite their track record here at Dr. Gourmet, they should come up with one or two that are pretty good. Right? Hold that thought.

Fish is so good for you that a convenience meal with fish in it would really be a great help for those who have a hard time finding the time to cook. I can understand why they’re so hard to find, however. Fish just doesn’t generally reheat well unless you cook it very carefully in the first place. My Saffron Salmon Risotto is a good example of this. It was created specifically for a patient who did shift work and often ate her main meal of the day out of the microwave. This recipe was designed so that when it was reheated the fish didn’t become mushy or break down. The good news is….

Dr. Tim Says….

When I am giving talks I always joke that none of my patients ever eats Oreo cookies. This always gets a big laugh and I believe that folks are laughing at themselves. We aren’t always honest with ourselves and probably even more often are not completely honest with our doctors (shocking, I know). I base my assertion that my patients are so good on the fact that when I discuss people’s diets with them only one has ever admitted to eating cookies. One. That’s it. A single patient in the last fifteen years.

Now, I find this really strange because the aisles in the grocery are FULL of cookies (but none of my patients are buying them).

I would really like to leave the office and drive to their house to root through their cupboards and refrigerator. Maybe I’d be proved wrong, but the research says that folks have an awful lot of cookies in their pantry. Studies of people’s trash have shown this repeatedly, with researchers finding a clear disconnect with what people will say they are eating and what ends up in their trash bins. Change Your Pantry and Get Healthy

Featured Recipe

Crawfish Pie

Fish pies like this are hugely popular in England. Done right they are the best comfort food. This twist on the traditional recipe includes a rich creamy filling topped with yummy mashed potatoes. The dish has it all – fish and veggies in a warm comforting meal.

One of the tests in developing this recipe was done with purple potatoes. The dish was really beautiful with the pink crawfish folded together with the veggies and topped with the purple mashed potatoes.

Placed into individual au gratin dishes, these make a great dinner party meal. Everything can be done in advance and then placed under the broiler. It will take a little longer in the oven to reheat fully, however.

This recipe is safe for Coumadin (warfarin) users, is low in sodium, and is gluten-free. Those with GERD / Acid Reflux and those who are lactose-intolerant should avoid it.

Living Gluten Free
with Julie Gee

When I was first diagnosed with Celiac Disease, my first few gluten-free shopping trips took so long that the dairy items in my cart were warm by the time I got to the checkout. Despite what it may seem at first, there are ways to make shopping for gluten-free foods faster and easier. You will need to read every label, and that will take some time. Here are some ways that you can simplify your grocery shopping while still maintaining a healthy gluten-free diet.

First of all, remember that “wheat free” does not necessarily mean “gluten free.” Many items do not contain wheat, but they may have other sources of gluten in them, such as malt flavoring or contaminated oats. Before you put an item into your cart think about how it might have been cross-contaminated. Supermarket Strategies for a Gluten-Free Diet

Way back in May of 2007 I reported on the Intitute of Medicine’s report and recommendations for school nutrition standards. In that News Bite I mentioned that the Institute recommended specifically that each school district limit their students’ opportunities to choose foods that are not nutritionally approved. To recap:

“The approved foods include those that derive less than 35% of their total calories from fat and less than 10% of calories from saturated fats. They should be trans-fat free, get less than 35% of their total calories from sugars (with an exception made for certain types of yogurt), and contain less than 200 milligrams of salt per serving.”

Clearly the goal in limiting children’s access to these unapproved foods was to improve their diet. Faced with fewer junk food options, however, did they make better choices?

OK, I know that as a physician I am not supposed to let bias creep into my judgment. As a critic, however, it’s hard not to. One simply must face facts. Healthy Choice meals are not very good. By and large they have the manufactured flavor of old fashioned TV dinners and the ingredient list reads like a chemistry textbook. Neither are very appealing.

Imagine my surprise to see new Healthy Choice packaging. The white background really stood out in the freezer case at the grocery. And there is a new logo. Cute. That’s when I noticed the words “All Natural Entrees” on the package. It even says “Real Food!” Two From The “New” Healthy Choice

Our reviews of boxed macaroni and cheese meals have been really popular. It was pretty amazing to me, but I suppose that I should not be surprised. These are easy and pretty inexpensive ways to feed kids and you can tell how much in demand they are just by looking at how much shelf space they take up in the grocery store.

We thought that our reviews had covered most of them but we found a couple more. Why keep reviewing them? Partly the popularity and partly because these two in particular have a lot of fiber (good for your kids). More Whole Wheat Mac ‘n’ Cheese

There are only 280 calories and a reasonable 520 mg of sodium. It was a bit more encouraging coming out of the microwave. The aroma was pretty good – a fresh garlic smell. And it’s actually good. Not great but good (this is frozen food, after all).

The pasta is not cooked to heck and gone – it has a little bit of a firm texture. The sauce is pleasant with a fairly good garlic flavor and the chicken is tender. Not a terrible meal, but not a great one. Three Pastas from Weight Watchers

There aren’t a lot of frozen meals on the market with fish as the main course. This is understandable since microwaving fish is a tricky prospect. This is, however, a problem if you eat frozen dinners too often (which a lot of folks do). I was pleased to see the Salmon with Basil, but I wondered how well it would turn out.

I once worked on some recipes for a patient who did shift work. You know, it’s pretty easy for me as a doctor to say, “Eat fatty fish 3 times a week,” but if you are working in the middle of the night and your dinner is always coming from a microwave, this is more difficult. So I know the challenge for Lean Cuisine. Salmon and Chicken Options From Lean Cuisine

The last time that we tasted boxed Mac & Cheese was about a year and a half ago. At the time I did this at the urging of my brother. His kids ate a lot of the stuff, and he felt that the Annie’s products came out pretty good (they did in our tests). This company has made a name for itself and has probably fed almost every kid whose moms and dads shopped at Whole Foods or the like.

I was wandering the aisle looking for some good quality pastas for an upcoming recipe when there they were – Annie’s D.W. Whole Wheat Pasta and Alfredo. Whole wheat? Hmm… I thought. Looking at the package there’s 5 grams of fiber per serving. Hmmm…

Eat

The first thing that you notice about the Annie’s D.W. Whole Wheat Pasta and Alfredo, after cooking the pasta and adding it to the powdered cheese and milk, is that the cheese smells like CHEESE. Amazing I know, but there it is. Whole Wheat Macaroni & Cheese Dinners

I had a patient the other day say that they liked all Lean Cuisine products. There’s no doubt that they are popular, and more are good than bad, but there are some real duds. After the discussion I realized that it had been some time since we had reviewed any of their products, so this week we review three from Stouffer’s: Baked Chicken, Linguine Carbonara, and Beef Chow Fun. Three More From Lean Cuisine

Convenience Foods

Featured Recipe

Spanish Beef Stew with Olives

Stews are great. It’s just that simple. You can throw it all in a pot, put the pot on to cook and two hours later you have dinner. The great thing is that this is so versatile and this is typified by the fact that every culture has hundreds of stew recipes.

Most folks think that stews are not healthy but this really isn’t the case. Start with lean meats like top round, flank steak or bottom round. Trim the excess fat carefully before starting the stew and you’ll end up with a dish that’s not greasy and great for you.

This recipe is low in sodium (salt) and is safe for Coumadin (warfarin) users, those who are sensitive to gluten and those who are lactose intolerant. Those with GERD / Acid Reflux should avoid it.

A Healthy Pregnancy
with Faith Bontrager, RN, BSN

Congratulations to you on your pregnancy! Congratulations to your baby! Baby, you have a mother that is taking time to make sure that she and you are well nourished.

My first recommendation would be to find a doctor or midwife with whom you can comfortably talk and who makes nutrition a priority. Don’t be afraid to call several offices and ask, “Dr Smith, how does your belief about nutrition affect your practice?” Your practitioner will have access to your blood and urine tests, can take a health history, and will do a physical exam. All of these will make a difference in recommendations that are specific to you and your current health.

Without knowing any of those things, here are some general guidelines.

I was shopping and noted that they were offering “Kids Meals.” I was struck by the blatant commercialism of this from a company that seems so, well, respectable. The meals for kids on the market are generally pretty terrible (note our review of Lunchables), so I figured maybe this would at least be better.

Dear Dr. Gourmet,

Q: What type of foods help to raise HDL (good) cholesterol?

Could you send me a list of foods for a low fat, low cholesterol diet? My husband just had 3 stents put in. He’s only 45 and I need to know what kind of meals to cook him.

A: The main foods that might have a positive effect on HDL (good) cholesterol are those that are high in unsaturated fats, especially monounsaturated fats like Omega 3 fats. You can find these in fatty fish like salmon, tuna, halibut and cod. Many nuts and seeds are also very high in monounsaturated fats.

There is no specific list of foods but there is a style of eating that can help.

Q: As a user of Coumadin blood control drugs and the need to watch the level of daily intake of vitamin K, I read in your pages that Kiwi Fruit contain a reasonable amount of this vitamin. Other sources list kiwi as virtually K free. Can you confirm the level of Vitamin K in this fruit?

A: Kiwi does contain Vitamin K. The USDA database reports a moderate amount. A medium kiwi (about 3 ounces) without the skin contains about 31 micrograms (mcg) of Vitamin K.

Q: I have put on warfarin for 6 months following a DVT in the left leg. I understand that it is safe to take pomegranate juice with warfarin.

There are some products here that are almost 70% pomegranate juice, but there are also some pomegranate juice products in the UK which have in addition a small amount of the juice of the Aronia berry added (eg. 23% pomegranate juice 2% of the Aronia berry and the remainder made up of white grape juice). The Aronia (chokeberry) is noted for its health giving properties throughout Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, but I cannot find if it has any interaction with warfarin. I obviously would like to continue taking the pomegranate juice because of its vascular strengthening properties, but would like to know if I could also take a product (these are quite a bit cheaper!) with the Aronia berry in it.

A: I have done a great deal of research on this in the last few weeks and I am not able to find any issues with the Aronia berry.

That said, the issues that have been reported with those drinking cranberry juice while taking Coumadin are clearly well reported in the literature. The reasons for this are not, however, well defined as to what is causing the interaction.

It is certainly possible that the Aronia berry could be an issue as it is somewhat related to cranberries….

Q: I would like to know what you consider the best meal replacement bar? I don’t have time to make a lunch, some days, and would like to be able to have one on hand for those busy days. Thanks for your help!

A: This is a great question. We’re all really busy today and the idea of being able to get a meal in a bar that you can eat on the run is really appealing.

While the ideal is to take the time to make a nice sandwich or pack some leftovers for lunch, you’re right that it doesn’t always happen. And, while most doctors and dieticians aren’t fans of meal bars, I believe that it’s a lot better choice than hitting up the fast food joint where you could toss back 1,000 calories pretty easily.

Keep in mind that choosing such bars is somewhat subjective….

Have a question?
Lean Cuisine Beats Airport Food

I was traveling the other day and flew through the Atlanta airport. There was about an hour layover on Concourse A and it was at dinnertime. Unfortunately, there’s not much good, healthy food offered for dinner in the Atlanta airport. They do have some pretty good sandwich places, but I wanted something more dinner-like. I ended up settling for an Asian chicken salad at Houlihan’s. It was terrible. Just plain awful. Wilted lettuce, cheap mandarin orange pieces, dry chicken and a too sweet dressing.

It’s bad when you think to yourself, “The food that I’ve had on board some planes is better than this.” Then I remembered that in reviews I have often compared frozen meals to airline food (sometimes it’s better and sometimes worse). I actually found myself wishing for one of the good frozen meals we have reviewed here at Dr. Gourmet.

The good news is that we’ve found two more good ones from Lean Cuisine. Meals can be a bit hit or miss with the folks over at Stouffer’s, but we lucked out this week.

This is because I like to have dishes that are in some way similar to compare with each other. This week’s meal doesn’t have much to compare with, however. In fact, it appears to be the only one of its kind on the market.

We’ve heard a lot of feedback from readers about DiGiorno Harvest Wheat crust pizza. Finally! A frozen pizza with a wheat crust! Even though we’ve heard about this, it’s not all that easy to find. The frozen pizza case is prime real estate in grocery stores and I’ve been checking for a while now without much success. But finally there it was but only in one variety – the Thin Crispy Crust Supreme Pizza.

These new meals, Fresh Mixers, are sort of like those except that you cook the rice or pasta “fresh” in the microwave in a little plastic steamer that comes with the product.

These really are a cute gimmick but a needless one. After peeling off the plastic retaining strap the top lifts off and a tray of sauce lifts out. Fill the bowl with water to the fill line and then snap on the top.

Three From Michelina’s

I have looked at Michelina’s in the freezer case for some time. With all the other choices out there we just haven’t gotten around to reviewing them. There is something about the packaging that on the one hand is more environmentally friendly, but it makes them look cheap. There’s no traditional box with the little plastic tray inside. The tray is cardboard as is the top. You simply peel back the cover and pop the whole thing in the microwave.

We tested three. Two came from their Authentico line and one from the Lean Gourmet brand. All three….
