My response is that prenatal vitamins can never replace healthy food.</p>

Yes and No. There is very good evidence that adequate folate (the nutrient in food) and folic acid (the equivalent substance in supplements) does decrease the rate of neural tube birth defects such as spina bifida. While I am not one who believes that tomato paste should be labeled a vegetable, a big serving of good quality tomato sauce should probably qualify. Tomatoes are great for you &#8211; and what&#8217;s even more interesting, they appear to be as good for you when they&#8217;re cooked as when they&#8217;re raw.</p>
<p style="font-family: Tahoma, verdana, arial; font-size: 12px; color: #333333; line-height: 22px;">Technically, tomatoes are fruits. OK, it&#8217;s a small point, but either way, you should eat more tomatoes. Tomatoes are full of flavor, low in calories, have a fair amount of fiber and are chock full of vitamins and antioxidants. One of those antioxidants, lycopene, has been linked to lowering the risk of prostate cancer and having a beneficial effect on LDL cholesterol. Tomatoes are one of the best sources of lycopenes and cooking them actually helps release the antioxidant. A medium raw tomato has about 3.5 milligrams of lycopene, while tomato sauce has almost 20 milligrams in a half a cup and tomato soup about 25 milligrams in a cup. <a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.drgourmet.com/ingredients/tomatoes.shtml" target="_blank">Tomatoes</a></p>

The recipes on the Dr. Gourmet website are not designed to be very low sodium (under 2,000 mg per day) but there are many recipes that are lower sodium. Generally speaking, I try to keep main course recipes around 500 mg and side dish recipes at 250 mg or less.</p>

We do know that Mediterranean style diet doesn&#8217;t really include drinking milk. Those in Mediterranean countries consume the majority of their dairy as processed dairy such as cheese and yogurt.</p>

<p style="font-family: Tahoma, verdana, arial; font-size: 12px; color: #333333; line-height: 22px;">It&#8217;s interesting to me that people believe that it&#8217;s more expensive to eat at home when it comes to a fast food type meal (<a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tim-harlan-md/health-food-prices_b_862770.html" target="_blank">myth debunked here</a>), but don&#8217;t have trouble believing that it&#8217;s less expensive to have a &#8220;gourmet&#8221; meal at home. After all, pretty much every restaurant looks for the ingredient cost of a meal they serve to come in around 1/3 the amount they charge the consumer.</p>

The interviewer&#8217;s focus was on &#8220;belly fat&#8221; and it&#8217;s clear that people are concerned about it and are looking for a diet plan to help them with it. While I don&#8217;t care for hype, the fact is that a Mediterranean diet offers many of the same benefits that fad diets make their claims about, but the Mediterranean diet has the distinction of being backed by solid research &#8211; and you get to eat great food. <a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.drgourmet.com/column/dr/2011/050211.shtml" target="_blank">How to Lose Belly Fat</a></p>

They have been clearly associated with liver failure. There&#8217;s no guarantee that the company making them has quality controls in place to make sure of no contaminants. Likewise, many have been taken off of the market by the FDA because of the inclusion of pharmaceutical-grade medications. There are very poor controls on the supplement industry and I never recommend any of these sorts of products to anyone for any reason. <a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.drgourmet.com/askdrgourmet/health/greenteaextract.shtml" target="blank">Green Tea Extract</a></p>
<p style="font-family: Tahoma, arial, helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;"><img style="padding-left: 10px;" src="http://www.drgourmet.com/newsletter/2011/images/pomegranate.jpg" border="0" alt=" " width="200" height="133" align="right" /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 22px; color: #ff6600;">Q:</span> Lately I have been hearing a lot about the benefits of pomegranate juice from helping with prostate cancer to weight loss and lowering cholesterol. Is this the new &#8220;wonder food?&#8221; Also, cinnamon seems to be another fabulous supplement, lowering blood sugar is the main claimed help. I am wondering if any of these claims have any medical proof?</p>
<p style="font-family: Tahoma, arial, helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 22px; color: #ff6600;">A:</span> There is no &#8220;wonder food.&#8221; It&#8217;s a shame, because it would make our lives a bit easier, but it just isn&#8217;t true.</p>
<p style="font-family: Tahoma, arial, helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-color: #999999;">There is some evidence that pomegranate juice contains a lot of antioxidants, and we know that consuming antioxidants can help prevent disease. In most research, however, it&#8217;s difficult to make substantial claims without having large controlled trials. Time and again, small trials have shown positive results only to be disproven with large scale studies. <a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.drgourmet.com/askdrgourmet/pomegranate-cinnamon.shtml" target="_blank">Pomegranate and Cinnamon</a></p>

I just started taking multivitamins a week ago because I am vegan, live in the Pacific Northwest, and am trying to conceive so I need B12, vitamin D, and folic acid. Would you say that I could interpret this new study to say that I should toss the multivitamins and just take individual supplements for those ingredients I listed above? I would really appreciate your input in this matter as I have PCOS and Endometriosis and therefore have an abundance of estrogen which would seem to place me in higher risk according to this study.</p>

<p style="font-family: Tahoma,verdana,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">But  recently, due to various usual work frustrations, holidays, etc. my  weight has crept back up about 5-8 pounds. I want to shed this weight  plus a little extra to make sure I&#8217;m well into my healthy BMI range. I  suspect that my metabolism is pretty low from following that diet for so  long, and it seems like the only way to lose this excess is to go back  on Medifast, due to my body being used to so few calories.</p>
<p style="font-family: Tahoma,verdana,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">I&#8217;ve  done this (Medifast) without much success so far for the past month or  two. But I&#8217;m tired of it! The profile I created on The Real World Diet  shows I should consume 1500 calories per day, but it seems like if I  consume 1500 calories per day, I&#8217;ll either not lose any weight or maybe  even start gaining! I feel like I&#8217;ve shot myself in the foot. Am I stuck  with restricting my calorie intake to less than 1000/day?</p>
<p style="font-family: Tahoma,verdana,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 22px; color: #ff6600;">A:</span> While I am not a fan of diets like Medifast, it does work for some  folks. There are the issues with such diets of slowed metabolism when  being on so few calories. Another concern of mine is that the programs  seldom spend enough time teaching folks how to transition back to  healthy eating. Consequently, there is often a creeping weight gain once  you end the diet.</p>
<p style="font-family: Tahoma,verdana,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999999;">You may do very well on <a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.drgourmet.com/user/login.php" target="_blank">The Real World Diet</a>. The noodles, sometimes called cellophane noodles, can become quite gummy when they are overcooked. If you&#8217;ve had a bad version of Pad Thai, you know what I mean.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">The key is to keep the water going at a slow boil and stir the noodles almost from the moment you add them to the pot. Keep a close eye on them and don&#8217;t overcook them. At about the 7 minute mark start tasting for doneness. When they have just a very slight chewiness they are ready. You can drain them in a colander, but I just use tongs to pick up the noodles and let them drain into the pan. Shake them a bit and then toss them into the bowl with the oil, which will coat them and keep them from sticking together too much.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">This recipe works well with grilled flank steak, scallops or shrimp.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">This recipe is gluten-free and lactose-free. Those with GERD / Acid Reflux, Coumadin (warfarin) users and those on low-sodium diets should avoid it.</p>

Sad, I suppose, but I loved them as a kid too. If you don&#8217;t really care for them, try this technique of shredding them and steaming. They lose a lot of their bitterness and are sweet. This makes them a great base for salads. You can use almost any variation with this. Salmon or shrimp would work great. Peas or garbanzos instead of corn. Almonds instead of pine nuts. That&#8217;s the great thing about recipes. Once you have the building blocks you can tailor them to your own taste.</p>

All my levels are great, iron,  calcium etc. One thing that stood out was that I had folate levels  double that of the average population. Could this be a problem? I know  folate is great for baby healthy and growth, but what about high folate?</p>

Having a high folate level should not be a problem. Not only is breastfeeding not my specialty, herbs aren&#8217;t either. I turned to two people. The answer below is from Nurse Faith and this is supported by one of my colleagues in the Department of Pediatrics.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;"><span style="color: #006600; font-weight: bold;">Faith Bontrager, RN, BSN Says:</span> Fenugreek is often recommended by natural practitioners to increase milk supply. It safe for normal healthy women if you stick to recommended doses. Fenugreek often works in three days or so. I have found that it seems to help some women but not others. Despite the name &#8220;morning sickness,&#8221; pregnancy nausea happens throughout the day for many women. It is most common in the first trimester but 13% of women had nausea past their 20th week of pregnancy.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">What causes this nausea? Researchers are not certain but the most common explanation is that a rise in HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a growth hormone plays a large part. So much research has now shown that they&#8217;re a great choice in everything from snacks to being used as part of recipes. One important study shows that nuts added to a Mediterranean Diet made a huge difference in developing metabolic syndrome (<em>Arch Intern Med</em> 2008: 168; 2449 &#8211; 2458). Do keep in mind that nuts are considered fats and are higher in calories. Even so, the types of fat are so much better for you since most are low in saturated fat and high in unsaturated fats.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">In another study of folks already on a Mediterranean diet, those who added walnuts to their diet had an additional 4% decrease in total cholesterol. Eating 3 ounces of almonds per day for 9 weeks had a as much as a 10% drop in cholesterol. To make it even better nuts and seeds are chock full of antioxidants and Vitamin E as well as magnesium, copper, monounsaturated fat, plant sterols, protein and fiber.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">While a lot of the studies are funded by industry groups like the California Walnut Commission, much of it is excellent research and the conclusions are pretty compelling. There may be some possibility that almonds are better than walnuts and walnuts are better than cashews or peanuts, but I don&#8217;t believe that we have as much information about this as we need to. Eat what you like. Raw may be better than roasted and certainly eating your nuts unsalted is likely to be better for you. <a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.drgourmet.com/column/dr/2009/021609.shtml?phpMyAdmin=dbd41ebde3811bec32e2fb41528ee291" target="_blank">Nut and Seed Choices</a></p>

I want to shed this weight plus a little extra to make sure I&#8217;m well into my healthy BMI range. I suspect that my metabolism is pretty low from following that diet for so long, and it seems like the only way to lose this excess is to go back on Medifast, due to my body being used to so few calories.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">I&#8217;ve done this (Medifast) without much success so far for the past month or two. But I&#8217;m tired of it! The profile I created on your Quality Calorie Diet shows I should consume 1500 calories per day, but it seems like if I consume 1500 calories per day, I&#8217;ll either not lose any weight or maybe even start gaining! I feel like I&#8217;ve shot myself in the foot. Am I stuck with restricting my calorie intake to less than 1000/day?</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px; color: #006600;">A:</span> While I am not a fan of diets like Medifast, it does work for some folks. There are the issues with such diets of slowed metabolism when being on so few calories. Another concern of mine is that the programs seldom spend enough time teaching folks how to transition back to healthy eating. Consequently, there is often a creeping weight gain once you end the diet.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">You may do very well on <a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.drgourmet.com/user/login.php?phpMyAdmin=dbd41ebde3811bec32e2fb41528ee291" target="_blank">The Quality Calorie Diet</a>. The software chooses a calorie target based on your height and weight. The computer is not, however, a doctor or dietician sitting in a room with you discussing all of the factors that go into the amount of calories you eat vs. exercise, your likes and dislikes, your precise Body Mass Index, Waist to Hip Ratio, etc.. It may be that you will do better at 1,200 or 1,000 calories for a short period of time while you lose the 5 &#8211; 8 lbs. and get to your target and that the 1,500 calories is a good target for you to maintain your weight. This is why there is the option of selecting the number of calories yourself. <a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.drgourmet.com/askdrgourmet/medifast.shtml?phpMyAdmin=dbd41ebde3811bec32e2fb41528ee291" target="_blank">Check with your doctor&#8230;.</a></p>

I couldn&#8217;t even order plain cooked vegetables because the seasoning had HFCS in it. Another high class expensive restaurant in downtown Seattle, though, refuses to serve anything with HFCS in it. The manager said, &#8220;I think it will be the death of the human race.&#8221;</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px; color: #006600;">A:</span> You are right that there is a lot of controversy about high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) these days. I have done a lot of reading and looked at the research that we have now and I find that it is inconclusive. We simply don&#8217;t know for sure if eating HFCS is any more harmful than sucrose (table sugar). Some research says yes and some says no. Some indicates that it has contributed to the problems of obesity and others not.</p>
<p style="font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;">People have reported reactions such as you have had to many &#8220;artificial&#8221; foods such as aspartame, Splenda and MSG. Whether this is widespread with <a style="color: #006600;" href="http://www.drgourmet.com/askdrgourmet/hfcs.shtml?phpMyAdmin=dbd41ebde3811bec32e2fb41528ee291" target="_blank">HFCS&#8230;.</a></p>
<p style="font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica; font-size: 12px; color: #000000; line-height: 22px;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px; color: #006600;">Q:</span> My eatTHISdiet has chosen the 1500 calorie diet for me, but I am a new mother (5 month old) and want to be sure that 1500 calories will be enough to support healthy breastfeeding.</p>

Depending on your size, the estimate runs from about 300 &#8211; 500 extra calories per day over what your body would normally use.</p>

It&#8217;s not just caused by the growing fetus, but the valve at the top of the stomach, called the lower esophageal sphincter, becomes weaker in pregnancy. Just why this happens is not known, but the theory is that the pregnant woman&#8217;s higher levels of estrogen and progesterone may contribute to the weakened sphincter, allowing the stomach&#8217;s contents to reflux back into the esophagus.</p>
