What Hypertension Doctors Eat

Sad, but true. Another conference, another table of quality food choices. This is the mid-morning snack. Biegnets and sauce with a table full of soda.

Hmm... soda causes high blood pressure, right?

Yep, those are beignet with three sauces.

  • I'm doing my prelim year in Medicine and I *always* bring my own food even when there's free food at noon conference. Many of my colleagues eat fried food from the cafeteria several days each week. I don't get to eat very often at work, but when I do at least I know it's reasonably healthy fare!

  • I wish I could say this surprises me. Last year my mother spent the majority of December/January in the hospital and I was there with her 95% of the time. Finding something reasonably healthy to eat was impossible. I was in no frame of mind to organize and pack food - she was having one cardiac crisis after another - and so I lived off the cafeteria offerings. The food at the hospital was good, but it was not healthy in the slightest. The only redeeming item I could get was a ginger broth and seafood soup in the food court, but it was only open from 11 - 4. I gained 7 pounds in two months, and I firmly believe the only reason I didn't gain more was because I spent a lot of time walking around this huge hospital when my anxiety started climbing.
